Atrophic scars
Atrophic scars are flat and depressed relative to the surrounding skin. The skin is dryer than normal and less elastic. Typically small and round, they are commonly a sequel to cystic acne or varicella when the inflammatory process destroys collagen within the dermis. Histologically, the skin may be of reduced thickness and has a loss of normal architecture.
Treatment modalities used for atrophic scars have included injectable collagen filler material and the CO2 or Er:YAG laser resurfacing.
