Mode of action
Misoprostol is an ester of prostaglandin E1. It acts by binding to prostaglandin receptors on the parietal cells resulting in:
- reduction of gastric acid production
- increase in gastric mucus production
- increase in mucosal blood flow
- increase in duodenal bicarbonate secretion
