Tramadol is an analgesic which may act in two ways:

  • as an opioid analgesic
  • by enhancing central serotonergic and adrenergic pathways

There are less of the typical opioid side-effects such as:

  • respiratory depression
  • constipation

Occasional psychiatric reactions have been reported.
