The wish to make sense of the death and/or to find someone to blame, often results in the bereaved person going over and over in their mind the events that led up to it. They remember instances when they might have done or said something differently, and wonders if, and how much, they are to blame for the death.
When anger and blame is turned onto the self, it leads to the sense of guilt that is so commonly part of grief.
