This is a rare presentation in clinical practise.
95% of the patients who present are women, and they possess isolated phobias with few other symptoms. They usually do not suffer from generalised anxiety and do not appear neurotic on testing.
These phobias appear to persist from normal childhood equivalents.
Systematic desensitisation is an effective form of treatment.
