There are characteristic facial appearances associated with psychiatric disorders:

  • a sad face with downturned corners of the mouth, flattened expressions and vertical furrowing of the brows suggests depression

  • horizontal furrowing of the brow with wide eyes, sweating and dilated pupils suggests anxiety

  • a expressionless, mask-like face suggests the parkinsonian syndrome

  • Graves' disease is characterised by exophthalmos
