Diagnostic criteria
- frequent bulimic episodes:
- episodes of gross overeating which are associated with a definite sense of loss of control
- episodes of gross overeating which are associated with a definite sense of loss of control
- compensatory behaviour, such as:
- dieting,
- self-induced vomiting
- purgative abuse
- diuretics
- vigorous exercising
- extreme concerns about shape and weight - the same "core psychopathology" as in anorexia nervosa
The relationship between this disorder and anorexia nervosa is controversial. It is conventional to rule that the diagnosis of anorexia nervosa "trumps" that of bulimia nervosa, ie. there is an implicit fourth diagnostic criterion - no marked weight loss
