Methadone hydrochloride

Authoring team

Methadone hydrochloride is an antitussive and analgesic compound used for the relief of cough and pain in terminal disease.

It is contraindicated in other situations because of its addictive properties, and its tendency to cause sputum retention and ventilatory failure.

Its effects are longer acting than those of morphine, which may result in a cumulative effect - thus it should not be given more than twice a day; it is also less sedating.
