The aim of psychoanalysis is to help to develop awareness spontaneously. However when the analysis of unconscious processes becomes unsettling and painful, the patient may develop 'resistances' to the therapeutic task. In this situation the therapist may offer explanations - interpretations - to the patient to the patient about the unconscious processes which are operating.
