When to refer to secondary psychiatric services

The GP should consider referral to a psychogeriatric team in the following circumstances:

  • when the assessment and management of the patient exceeds the experience and knowledge of the GP
  • when there is clear evidence of suicidal intent
  • when there is suspicion of suicidal intent
  • when there is a poor response to treatment of mental disease
