Electromyographyy

Authoring team

Electromyography assesses activity in the urethral sphincter during filling and voiding. A fine needle electrode is inserted into the periurethral striated muscles or into the rectum to monitor the pelvic floor muscles. In the normal sphincter, electrical activity increases during filling and ceases during voiding.

EMG is not commonly performed as it monitors only one of the muscle groups involved in urethral closure.
