- sporadic - 20%
- familial juvenile nephronophthisis - autosomal recessive inheritance - 50%
- renal-retinal dysplasia - autosomal recessive inheritance, associated with retinitis pigmentosa - 15%
- adult-onset medullary cystic disease - autosomal dominant inheritance - 15%
