Renal osteodystrophy

Renal osteodystrophy is a skeletal disorder seen in patients with renal failure. It may develop early in the course of chronic renal disease, and may persist after renal transplantation.

Renal osteodystrophy is a combination of:

  • secondary hyperparathyroidism
  • osteomalacia
  • vitamin D deficiency

In patients undergoing haemodialysis the osteodystrophy is associated with aluminium toxicity.
