Recipient selection
A patient's suitability for renal transplantation depends upon:
- pre-existing disease:
- from systemic effects of chronic renal failure, such as hypertension - these are more common in older patients
- other disease - malignancy, pre-existing cardiovascular disease
- technical feasibility of operation:
- patients with bladder outflow obstruction may require a transplant into an ileal or colonic conduit
- arterial anastomosis may be difficult in patients with extensive vascular disease
