Causes include:

  • any cause of hypoaldosteronism
  • any cause of hyporeninaemia, including chronic renal disease, for example in diabetes mellitus
  • renal resistance to aldosterone
  • drugs e.g. ACE-inhibitors, beta-blockers, NSAIDs, potassium sparing diuretics, cyclosporin
