The causes of moderately severe haemoptysis include:

  • chronic bronchitis
  • acute-on-chronic bronchitis
  • pneumonia (especially pneumococcal)
  • pulmonary oedema
  • mitral stenosis
  • acute left ventricular failure
  • pulmonary embolism
  • rupture of a mucosal vessel e.g. coughing
