Bronchial gland carcinoma

These arise from bronchial submucosal glands. Two types are described:

  • mucoepidermoid carcinoma:
    • nests and cords of malignant squamous cells with areas of mucopolysaccharides
    • low- and high-grade forms exist

  • adenoid cystic carcinoma:
    • resembles the adenoid cystic carcinoma found within the salivary glands
    • growth is initially slow, but eventually, it metastasises to regional lymph nodes
    • there is a propensity for perineural involvement
