Cystic adenomatoid malformation is a congenital anomoly of the lung, where there is a single lobe of a lung enlarged and cystic.
The consequences of this are compression of the rest of the lung, with respiratory distress. There may be considerable interuterine and perinatal morbidity.
The radiological appearance of this condition may be confused with the loops of bowel in the chest in congenital diaphragmatic hernia; this condition, however, does not result in a paucity of loops of bowel in the abdomen.
Treatment is by surgical excision of the affected lobe.
There is a reported increased risk of development of tumours of the lung.
