Dry powder inhalers

Authoring team

Dry powder inhalers are convenient and compact.

The inspiratory airflow disperses the powder. Requires a relatively rapid rate of inhalation to release the drug; therefore, variations in inspiratory effort markedly affect the efficiency of drug delivery to the lungs (1).

The necessity for coordination between actuation and inhalation is less when compared to pMDI (1).

A metered dose inhaler with a spacer is the preferred method of administering high-dose inhaled corticosteroids.
