Paradoxical emboli
A paradoxical embolus is a venous embolus which has gained access to the left side of the circulation without passage through the pulmonary circulation.
The majority arise from pelvic and leg veins in association with:
- right-to-left cardiac shunts
- pulmonary arteriovenous fistulas
