Delayed inflammatory response in asthma
The pro-inflammatory mediators, such as interleukin-5, released by mast cells recruit eosinphils, basophils and Th2-lymphocytes.
Eosinophils release:
- peroxidase
- major basic protein
- eosinophil cationic protein
- interleukins 3 and 5
The results are:
- ongoing inflammation
- sensitisation of sensory nerve endings resulting in bronchial hyper-responsiveness
