This is inflammation of the pleura, and is also sometimes called pleuritis.
Patients present with pleuritic chest pain, often with a pleural rub, but without a pleural effusion.
In some cases the pleura remains 'dry' i.e. there is no subsequent accumulation of pleural fluid. However some causes subsequently develop a pleural effusion.
