Compared to normal muscle, that in polymyositis shows:

  • reduced duration and amplitude of action potentials
  • greatly increased proportion of polyphasic action potentials
  • in severe weakness, the number of action potentials may be reduced
  • occasionally, there may be spontaneous fibrillations from the distal part of the neurone
