Anaesthesia is defined as the loss of feeling or sensation.

It is dealt with here in the context where it is medically induced for the control of symptoms such as pain or so that a surgical procedure may be performed. Alternatively, anaesthesia can be achieved by acupuncture.

Anaesthesia may be either general - whole body - or local - a region of the body.
