Management
Following aspiration of non-bloodstained fluid from a cyst, and given that the lump has disappeared the patient may be reassured.
If however the fluid is blood stained or there remains a residual breast mass, fluid should be sent for cytology, and any breast lump should be assessed with mammography and fine needle aspirate cytology.
1-3% of patients with breast cysts have carcinomas and those with multiple cysts have a slightly increased risk of developing breast carcinoma.
