Endosomes are small, membrane-bound vesicles formed by the invagination of the cell membrane during pinocytosis.

They may function as:

  • a means of bringing substances into the cell for degradation by fusion with a lysosome
  • a means of moving substances between the external surfaces of different regions of a cell membrane; an important mechanism for epithelia which are polarized, so having different membrane constituents separated from each other by junctional complexes
