Friction rub of the liver
A peritoneal friction rub is produced by friction between roughened peritoneal surfaces, for example from inflammation or tumour. It is heard as a creaking or grating noise during respiration.
Over the liver, a friction rub may be caused by:
- malignancy:
- primary - hepatocellular carcinoma
- secondary - metastases
- Fitz-Hugh-Curtis syndrome
- liver infarct
- recent liver biopsy
