These boundaries are the same as those of the costal surface of the lung; the difference is that mediastinal surface faces medially, is concave, and, as the name suggests, it forms the lateral boundary of the mediastinum. Indeed, the mediastinum is the source of the lung root on each side which enters the hilum.
