Adverse drug reactions have been recognised for a long time; indeed it was the discovery of the toxic effects of sulphanilamide which resulted in the formation of the FDA in the USA, and similarly the thalidomide problem in the UK.

More recently Benoxaprofen - Opren - has highlighted the need for drug companies to do preliminary studies in the elderly.
