Complications
- osteoarthritis of the first carpometacarpal joint
- stiffness - which may develop with any hand injury. To minimise this:
- encourage the patient to move and to exercise the fingers
- elevate the hand to control swelling
- use the minimum splintage necessary
- any immobilisation must be in the position of splintage with the ligaments taut
- do not splint with the metacarpophalangeal joints extended
