Clinical features of systemic toxicity

There is a characteristic pattern of features of inhalation injury resulting in systemic intoxication. If the patient does not die immediately, typically there is a decreasing level of consciousness progressing to stupor. With adequate support, there may be improvement with time and the following are typical symptoms:

  • confusion
  • poor mental abilities
  • drowsiness
  • visual disturbance
  • headache

However, certain symptoms or signs are associated with given agents, for example tetany with hydrofluoric acid.
