Epithelial

Authoring team

Superficial burns most commonly are due to sunburn or brief scalding.

Tissue damage and oedema are minimal, and the protective functions of the skin remain intact.

The most obvious features are:

  • pain - which persists for 48 to 72 hours
  • erythema
  • blanching

Systemic effects are rare. Spontaneous healing occurs within 5-10 days accompanied by peeling but not scarring.
