In the developed world, there are a recurring set of types of behaviour which are linked to burn injury:

  • careless behaviour; by far the most common risk factor e.g. smoking in bed
  • accident; e.g. motor vehicle accident
  • fitting; e.g. during an epileptic fit
  • syncope
  • alcohol; may predispose to careless behaviour
  • psychiatric conditions
