The primary survey of the patient with major burns follows ATLS precepts with slight modifications given the nature of the burn:

  • airway maintenance with cervical spine control
  • breathing and ventilation
  • circulation with haemorrhage control
  • disability and neurological status
  • exposure with environmental control
  • fluid resuscitation
  • investigations
  • monitoring of patient
  • analgesia
