Pancuronium is a steroid-based non-depolarising neuromuscular blocker causing muscular relaxation for about 40 to 60 minutes. Its relatively long duration, and the absence of ganglionic blockade or a significant effect on blood pressure have resulted in it being favoured for major surgery and shock. However, it does block the reuptake of noradrenaline - tachycardia is one key sequel.
Pancuronium is best avoided in kidney disease as it is partly excreted renally.
