Abductor hallucis muscle (anatomy)
The abductor hallucis is one of the intrinsic muscles of the foot within the first, most plantar layer.
It originates from the:
- medial process of the calcaneal tuberosity
- flexor retinaculum
- plantar aponeurosis
It passes on the medial side of the foot to insert into the:
- medial sesamoid bone of the hallux
- medial side of the base of the proximal phalanx of the hallux
Its actions are to:
- flex the big toe
- abduct the big toe
- support the medial longitudinal arch
Abductor hallucis in innervated by the medial plantar nerve (S2, S3).
