Aetiology by frequency
In order of frequency, velopharyngeal insufficiency commonly is due to the following causes:
- repaired or overt cleft palates
- neurological conditions
- submucous cleft palate
- post-adenoidectomy or adenoid hypoplasia
- tonsillar hypertrophy
- post-tumour resection or radiotherapy
