In order of frequency, velopharyngeal insufficiency commonly is due to the following causes:

  • repaired or overt cleft palates
  • neurological conditions
  • submucous cleft palate
  • post-adenoidectomy or adenoid hypoplasia
  • tonsillar hypertrophy
  • post-tumour resection or radiotherapy
