Alveolar structure
Alveoli are approximately 0.1 to 0.2mm in diameter and are lined by two types of cells:-
The type 1 pneumocyte has extensive flattened processes and makes up the majority of internal surface area of alveoli.
The type 2 pneumocyte is less numerous than type 1 cells, has a more globular shape, and has a principal function of manufacture and storage of surfactant.
