Aryepiglotticus muscle (anatomy)

Aryepiglotticus is one of the muscles on each side of the larynx. It originates from the apex of the arytenoid cartilage and then passes medially and superiorly to cross the contralateral aryepiglotticus in the midline. It inserts into the inferolateral border of the epiglottis. It has been considered as a continuation of the oblique arytenoid muscles - see submenu.

It acts to support the aryepiglottic folds and contraction of both muscles facilitates closure of the additus between the folds.

Aryepiglotticus is innervated by the recurrent laryngeal branch of the vagus nerve (X).
