Bovine tuberculosis
- infection is caused by Mycobacterium bovis
- acquired by drinking untreated milk or from contact with cattle and meat products - occupations at risk include those in which cattle are handled e.g. dairy farmers, abbatoir workers, vets
- M. bovis has been found in badgers and deers
- BCG immunisation is essential and effective for those at risk
- human infection results in a chronic progressive disease with weight loss and fever
- diagnosis is as for human tuberculosis
