The bulbospongiosus muscle in the female arises from the:

  • perineal body posteriorly
  • inferior fascia of the urogenital diaphragm laterally

It passes around the outside of the vagina to insert into the dorsum of the clitoris.

Bulbospongiosus in the female acts to:

  • close the vaginal introitus
  • facilitate clitoral erection
