Emphysema (subcutaneous)
- caused by air tracking from the lungs e.g. from a pneumothorax, or rarely, a rupture of the oesophagus.
- causes a crackling sensation that is felt on palpating the skin of the neck and chest. It may also cause a diffuse swelling of the chest wall and neck.
