Action
Gluteus medius and minimus tend to act as a single unit in terms of their actions:
- abduction of the hip joint:
- with greater functional relevance, they prevent adduction of the ipsilateral hip when body weight is supported only on this side during walking
- loss of this function is one cause of a positive Trendelenburg's sign
- medial rotation of the hip
