High gastrin levels

Authoring team

Some conditions are associated with raised gastrin levels. Examples of causes of marked elevation in gastrin levels include:

  • gastrinoma
  • small bowel resection
  • hypochlorhydria - leads to hyperplasia of the antral gastrin secreting cells and 75% of patients with pernicious anaemia have a marked elevation in gastrin levels

Gastric ulcers may be associated with a mild elevation in gastrin levels. The gastrin level in patients with duodenal ulcers is normal but rises more than normal after a protein meal.
