The interspinales are one of the deep layer of intrinsic back muscles. They arise from the spinous process of a given vertebra and pass superiorly to insert into the spinous process of the vertebra immediately superior. They are most developed in the cervical region.
They are innervated by the posterior primary rami of the spinal nerve roots.
Interspinales acts to weakly extend the spinal column.
