Lagophthalmos
Lagophthalmos describes difficulty in complete closure of the eyelid over the eyeball.
Causes of lagophthalmos include:
- exophthalmos
- an impairment of mechanical closure of the lids e.g. burns of the eyelids
- paralysis of orbicularis oculi
- leprosy
This condition may result in corneal ulceration and keratitis.
Treatment:
- lubrication of eyes
- temporary tarsorrhaphy may be required if corneal ulceration develops
