Ogilvie's syndrome
- this is a functional gastrointestinal obstruction that is a result of malignant retroperitoneal infiltration. Other causes of this syndrome include:
- electrolyte imbalance
- fracture of the lumbar spine
- colonoscopy or water-soluble contrast enema - this excludes mechanical obstruction and allows decompression
- management: conservative, correction of electrolyte imbalance
