Ogilvie's syndrome

  • this is a functional gastrointestinal obstruction that is a result of malignant retroperitoneal infiltration. Other causes of this syndrome include:
    • electrolyte imbalance
    • fracture of the lumbar spine
  • colonoscopy or water-soluble contrast enema - this excludes mechanical obstruction and allows decompression
  • management: conservative, correction of electrolyte imbalance
