Pathological bereavement reaction

Bereavement may be considered pathological if:

  • prolonged - denial is usually overcome in two months; anger by six months and depression by twelve months
  • guilt is more than transitory
  • the patient is unable to talk about their feelings
  • the patient is suicidal or looks forward to joining the dead person.
