Checklists may be useful reminders of diagnoses:

  • the surgical sieve': congenital, trauma, infection, inflammation, metabolic, haematological, degenerative, psychological or iatrogenic

  • systems: CVS, RS, GIS, UGS, CNS, musculoskeletal, haematological etc. It can also be useful to think of hospital departments.

  • anatomical: eg for chest pain - skin, muscle, bones, pleura, lungs, heart, oesophagus and stomach

  • the RCGP triad: physical, psychological and social
